Abstract

Intergenerational relationships are presented as bonds that can result in exchanges of experiences and generational diversity. The aim of this article was to present results obtained from field research conducted by the authors during their Master’s degree, and to discuss an overview of how the grandparent–grandchild relationship appears in national and international literature. For this purpose, field research was carried out in a small town in the interior of Minas Gerais, São Miguel do Anta, combined with an integrative review in four databases. The field research highlighted a relationship marked by affective bonds and mutual knowledge exchange, in which both grandparents and grandchildren assume the roles of learners and teachers. The results of the review showed a growing intergenerational bond between grandparents and grandchildren in Europe, but few publications in Brazil. An emphasis on caregiving by grandparents, either in full-time dedication or custody of grandchildren, was evidenced.
