Evaluación de la goma del anacardo (Anacardium occidentale) como biocoagulante en el tratamiento de agua

Resumen

Para hacer el tratamiento de agua más sostenible y económico, se han estudiado biopolímeros como biocoagulantes. Estos materiales han demostrado excelentes resultados en comparación con los coagulantes y floculantes convencionales. La goma del anacardo surge como una alternativa debido a propiedades como su abundancia, fácil aislamiento y ausencia de toxicidad. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar la eficiencia de la goma del anacardo como biocoagulante y floculante en agua turbia sintética, comparando su desempeño con el coagulante convencional sulfato de aluminio en agua turbia con caolín. La eficiencia de las sustancias aisladas y combinadas se analizó en un equipo jar-test, simulando la etapa de coagulación/floculación. Se realizaron mediciones de turbidez y pH para determinar la eficiencia, las concentraciones ideales y el tiempo de sedimentación del proceso. Las pruebas demostraron que la goma posee una eficiencia de alrededor del 90% en un amplio rango de pH; con los materiales combinados, utilizando la dosis de 2 mg/L de goma del anacardo, fue posible reducir la cantidad de sulfato de aluminio en un 52 %, requiriéndose 12 mg/L para una remoción del 98,43 % de turbidez. Además, el tiempo de sedimentación se redujo a la mitad cuando la goma del anacardo se aplicó junto con el sulfato de aluminio, siendo necesarios 10 minutos para alcanzar una turbidez residual de 3,1 UNT, con una eficiencia del 97,5 %. Se concluye que la goma del anacardo presenta una elevada eficiencia para la remoción de turbidez y puede actuar como floculante, reduciendo la cantidad de coagulante metálico necesario y el tiempo del proceso.
