Abstract

Menopause causes hormonal changes that affect women's health and well-being, increasing the demand for natural therapies with fewer risks than Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Mulberry (Morus nigra L.), due to its compounds with estrogenic potential, emerges as a promising alternative. This study evaluated the sensory acceptance of a mulberry-based chewing gum and investigated the relationship between HRT use, perceived safety, and interest in phytotherapy. Approved by the Ethics Committee (approval no. 6.780.608), the study included 15 women and used two instruments: a questionnaire on women's health (covering HRT, phytotherapy, and menopausal symptoms) and a hedonic scale for the sensory analysis of the gum (visual, olfactory, and tactile aspects), without ingestion. Statistical analysis employed frequency distributions and the Chi-Square test (p<0.05). The results revealed a significant association between HRT use and perceived safety (p=0.001), as well as between menopause and interest in phytotherapy (p=0.006). The gum received unanimous acceptance, especially for its pleasant aroma and appearance. The data suggest that mulberry deserves further investigation as a natural therapy for menopause, considering its chemical composition as reported in the literature. The gum demonstrated preliminary sensory feasibility; however, it is emphasized that the study assessed only perception, not therapeutic effects. Further research is needed to evaluate efficacy and safety.
