Efectos del uso de plantas medicinales en enfermedades inflamatorias intestinales: una revisión integradora

Resumen

El objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar los efectos terapéuticos del uso de plantas medicinales en enfermedades inflamatorias intestinales a través de una revisión integradora. Se utilizaron las bases de datos PubMed, SciELO y LILACS, empleando descriptores específicos para la búsqueda y criterios de inclusión/exclusión para delimitar el alcance de la investigación. Se eligieron 25 artículos de investigación clínica que involucraron tanto a seres humanos como a animales. Las plantas medicinales fueron utilizadas, en su mayoría, en forma de extracto hidroalcohólico, así como en forma de supositorio, infusión (té), harina y pulpa. Aunque un estudio no haya logrado demostrar la eficacia del extracto utilizado, todas las investigaciones presentaron beneficios significativos, como la disminución de la pérdida de peso, del sangrado fecal, de las citocinas proinflamatorias, del reclutamiento de leucocitos y de la actividad de la enfermedad, además del aumento de la actividad antioxidante. En conclusión, las plantas medicinales pueden actuar como tratamiento complementario en las enfermedades inflamatorias intestinales al aliviar los síntomas, favorecer la cicatrización tisular y prevenir el desarrollo de la enfermedad, sin causar efectos secundarios.
